"one can very well pray for a restoration of physical health and at the same time take medicine prescribed by a doctor. in fact, a believer should normally do both. and there would seem to be a reasonable and right proportion between the use of these two means to the same end." - thomas merton

Date: 2007-04-23 04:10 pm (UTC)I'm glad that you are considering these things, Steph, but restoration comes about by more than just prayer. Our God is a God of means. That is to say that usually He does not wave a magic wand, so to speak, and heal us of our ills. Usually He will work through various means, people, events, etc., to bring about the change we seek. One of the means He specifically gives to us is a full and complete reliance on His ability to meet our needs. I realize this may seem like circular reasoning or counter-intuitive, but God's strength is perfected in our weakness. When we rely on God for our needs, the stresses we endure are greatly diminished. We are then freed to attend to other matters.
